On The Goddess Path: Meet Lakshmi, Goddess of Abundance and Beauty
By Julianne Baliva

How She Came To Me
It was the Full Corn Moon of August and I sat outside in my own yard which I'd transformed into a Goddess Grove.  I had gone there to meditate and ask guidance as to which Goddess I should write about next for this column.  Last issue, his decision had been deceptively easy - Morgan Le Fay had, in Her unmistakably direct fashion, simply tapped me on the shoulder and in no uncertain terms said, Choose Me.  Now I felt challenged and anxious to choose the correct and most appropriate Goddess for this issue.

Those who know me personally are aware that as a practicing medium, I have become both adept and comfortable seeing and interacting with both spirit and deities.  Yet as numerous Goddesses began to file into my grove, I caught my breath.  Aphrodite, Greek Goddess of Love ... Cerridwen, Celtic Goddess of the Cauldron of Rebirth ... Bast, Egyptian Goddess of Love and Joy ... Diana, Roman Goddess of the Moon ... Fortuna, Roman Goddess of Luck and Good Fortune ... They all came and continued to come ... Hathor, Egyptian sky Goddess ... Hectate, Greek Goddess of Magic and Mother of the Underworld ... Isis, Egyptian Goddess of Intuition and Psychic abilities; High Priestess to the Gods and Mother to all ... Kwan Yin, Chinese Mother of Compassion, Mercy and Healing ... and Sophia, Greek Goddess of Wisdom ...  All sat in the grove with me.

Wondrously, they all spoke as one.  In one voice they said, Beloved daughter, you have honored us well for many years, and for that, we honor you.  We wish for you to write about the Goddess who chose you many years ago to be one of Her own, her loyal Priestess and devotee.  They further conveyed that they well understood and honored my special love of the Goddess Lakshmi and that they would await their turn to be honored in the form of my writing about them.

So now, I want to share with all of you, my Mother Goddess Lakshmi, Hindu Moon Goddess of Prosperity, Good Fortune, Love and Protection.  Laksmi also represents beauty, generosity and true happiness for everyone on Earth.  Her consort is the Sun god Vishnu.  Call on Lakshmi and She will shower you and your loved ones with rich, abundant lives.  She will provide you with good fortune and sustenance and an ease of lifestyle.  Likewise, one should shower Her with appreciation, love, and gratitude for Her blessings.

It is said that this beautiful, four-armed Moon Goddess sprang from the churning ocean seated on a bloomed lotus flower, calm and serene, holding the lotus flower in two of Her hands.  Her left arm extended downward in an outpouring of jewels, and Her right arm led to a palm upon which was tattooed a lotus flower.  Lakshmi is typically pictured dressed in beautiful, rich garments, adorned with many jewels.  After She rose from the churning ocean, the Moon was the next to emerge.

As the story of Her emergence into the world continues, Lakshmi is coronated and adorned with more jewels.  It is then that She establishes Herself in the bosom of the god Vishnu and hence becomes his consort.  One by one, the gods began praying to the lovely Goddess Lakshmi, for few are those who behold Her that can refrain from adoring Her.

Lakshmi's sacred symbol, the lotus flower, is an image that has become familiar to many new age seekers or metaphysicians.  The metaphysical symbology of the lotus is that it roots deep in the mud of a lake, pushing its way up gradually through the water until the flower blooms in the light of heaven.  The lotus has long also symbolized the spiritual expansion of the human mind.

In India, the Festival of Lakshmi is celebrated during the months of October and November.  It is believed that each night during these months, Lakshmi visits every house on Earth and showers Her golden wealth, food, happiness and prosperity upon all.  Honor Lakshmi here on our shores and within your own abode by either aquiring a genuine lotus flower, or placing the drawing of one, in a place of honor.  Daily, light a small candle in one of her favorite colors, in Her honor.  Lakshmi's favorite colors are red, yellow, pink and green.

The true mission of Lakshmi is to bring happiness to Her children on Earth.  She can help one find the correct career and superbly reveals and provides the means to satisfy ones needs, providing we remove any restrictions on ourselves.  In my personal practice, I have found Lakshmi to be wonderfully loyal and reliable as I have called on Her many times to bring dreams, desires and ambitions to manifestation.  One of Lakshmi's specialities is to unveil and empower one's ability to accomplish life goals.

Most often, money or lack of it, restricts us from fulfilling our needs and goals.  But abundance is our birthright and no one knows this better than Lakshmi, our be-jeweled Goddess.  She has blessed and saved me more times than I can begin to count.  As a devotee of and Priestess to Mother Lakshmi, I honor Her consistently and appropriately.  Like most Goddesses, She loves to have a shrine dedicated to Her.  Her favorite colors are red, yellow, pink and green.  Shiny new quarters and pennies make Her very pleased.  Additionally, Her favorite foods are rice, almonds, coconut, dates and honey - a feast fit for a Goddess!  Lotus flowers and jasmine incense and fresh basil are especially preferred by Her.

The worshippers of Lakshmi in India refrain from eating any meat or animal products since Lakshmi is a mother of all living things.  So, prior to the rituals I perform in Her honor, I too refrain from eating any meat.  My favorite time to perform sacred rituals in honor of Lakshmi is on the New Moon, but you can certainly honor Her anytime you choose.  Why the New Moon for me?  As New Moon energies are in harmony with the birthing of abundance, I feel this is in harmnony too with Lakshmi's qualities.  Look for rituals performed to Lakshmi on New Moon, to come to completion in tandem with the lunar cycle, at Full Moon.

A Simple Ritual In Honor Of Lakshmi

Place 108 shiny new pennies in a bowl as an offering to Her.  Now recite this Hindu mantra (do not worry if you are pronouncing the sounds correctly or not; Lakshmi will smile down upon you for your efforts):

AUM SHRIM
MAHALAKSH MAYEE
NAMAHA

In this mantra, you are acknowledging that She is the Mother of Abundance.  If you choose, you may pen a letter to Her stating what your wishes are.  This letter may be added to your place of ritual or altar.

The New Moons this Autumn fall on September 23, October 22 and November 20.  Should you care to join me in honoring Lakshmi, then we shall meet in spirit, on the Path of the Goddess.

Goddess Bless!
